But how much better to have a place of your own on the island, where property prices are notably lower than other South Coast locations.
Some say a bridge or tunnel would improve work opportunities and raise salaries while others say a permanent link would destroy the island’s identity. It would certainly mean a property price hike.
“About 45 per cent of our house sales are to mainland buyers, pretty much split between holiday home buyers and people retiring,” says Ben Williams, director of Wootton Estate Agents in Ryde.
